VGEE Visualization Environment GUI 6/27/2001

This image shows the latest (6/27/2001) version of the VGEE visualization environment GUI.  The interface is divided into 5 main sections: Top menu bar, Top  icon bar, Visualization State Window, Probe Window, and the Main Display window.  Click on the image  to view the full resolution version.

This version of the GUI also includes a "SplitPane" display, which means the user can grab the vertical bar near the center of the display and drag it left or right to easily enlarge or decrease the user's current area of focus.

Top Menu Bar

This section includes a text based approach for accessing all the GUI functions.   Users can open files, save images, generate isosurfaces, invoke "help", set the viewpoint, etc. from the menu bar.

Top Icon Bar

This tool bar provides quick links to the most common file and I/O functionality the user will most often need.  Also, a dialogue box appears here for displaying hints, warnings, status, and any other information that will help guide the user in the use of the application.

Load local data, load remote data, save vis state, load vis state, save image, save movie, help.

Visualization State

This section displays the current state of the Main Display and provides buttons for adding new objects.  An interactive textual "JTREE" displays  the current objects  (isosurfaces, slices, maps, topography, etc.) that exist in the main display window.  Users can select these textual elements to change the corresponding object's characteristics (color, isovalue, slice placement, etc.).

The following icons give the user control for adding new objects.  When selected a window will pop up prompting the user for the appropriate input (isosurface value, slice location, trajectory length, etc.).  Once the user has created a new object, an new entry appears in the JTREE.

Make Isosurface, Slice, Vectors, Trajectories

Probe Window

This window will interact with Dan's Probe Tools.  Currently this is not implemented and exists as an image in the interface.

The icons allow the user to pick a probe tool.  Any suggestions for some more creative images here?

Temperature Probe, Condensation Probe, Adiabatic I Probe, Adiabatic 2 Probe.

Main Display Window

This window shows a 3D display of the visualization, and provides 3D interactive mouse control to zoom, pan, and rotate the objects.

The VCR icons control animation: Step Reverse, Play Reverse, Stop, Play Forward, Step Forward.

The Orientation icons set the view to pre configured viewpoints: Home, Top, Bottom, North, South, East, West.
