Web Portal Interface Design Workshop Agenda |
Date: January 23rd and 24th, 2003 Location: National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Directions: http://www.ucar.edu/ucar/maps.html Room:
SCD Visualization Lab (Room 4G) Purpose: This meeting is intended to focus on the design of a web portal interface providing access to both observed and simulated earth-centric data sets with application to continuing scientific discovery, diagnostics and inter-comparison within the climate research community. Moreover this workshop will address the requirements needed for a climate community web portal interface, and initiate a design based upon the discussed requirements. Specified requirements for the back-end tools (security, registration, search, etc.) as needed to support the web interface will be discussed at a later time. This is intended to focus this workshop and keep the level of brainstorming activity focused on ÒWeb Portal Interface DesignÓ. It is realized that other technical aspects must be agreed upon prior to an actual prototype is developed in the future (i.e., a common API for the components of the web portal), as well, we hope to address some of these concerns at this meeting. Day 1: Each presenter will give a brief presentation on what they think are the requirements and important issues in the design of a web portal interface. Then lead a discussion on the main topics covered in their presentation. Each presenter is given 45 minutes. Due to the tight schedule, we must enforce the time constraints. Start the requirement brainstorming phase of the workshop. Adjourn for dinner and bond at a local pub. J Day 2: Summarize what was learned from the previous dayÕs session and come to a consensus on the requirements for the design of the web portal interface. List the projects that will be needed to design the web portal interface and come to an agreement on who will be responsible for each project. Poses a timeline on the tasks assigned to the groups. Establish a means for communication (i.e., e-mail, Access Grid, phone conference, another workshop, etc.). Workshop Summary: A detailed summary will follow the workshop describing in detail the web portal interface requirements and agreed upon design. A task list with timelines and all presentations presented at the workshop will also be included in the workshop summary. Workshop Agenda - Day 1 Thursday, January 23, 2003 SESSION 1.
